Short stated he was being taunted and acted in self-defense, and his opponent admitted he had removed his jersey and was prepared to fight Short before the punch caused a concussion and fractured eye socket. Short also avoided jail by pleading no contest to a felony assault charge after throwing "a running punch" at his in-law during a family gathering at a bar. In 2014, as part of a no-jail plea agreement, Short pleaded guilty to misdemeanor domestic violence and performed 30 hours of community service. The couple wed in December of that year and have two sons together. His sentence was, however, cut short as he only spent 34 days behind bars of his 365-day sentence. According to reports cops were called to a home in the San Fernando Valley Wednesday night around 10:30 PM over a verbal argument between Short and his wife that allegedly became physical. He was among the presenters at the 2007 NAACP Image Awards. Columbus Short has been arrested once again for domestic violence. In 2006, he appeared in NBC's Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip as novice show-writer Darius Hawthorne.
